Kids
growing up in today’s culture have different challenges and
expectations than the generations of children before them. This fact
causes us to consider that perhaps we need to parent differently
than our parents did. But
how?
As
a parent, we have one of the most important and difficult jobs in
the world!
Do
you have a clear sense of purpose guiding your responsibilities as a
parent? Should we be
aiming for more than raising children who are independent and well
behaved? Do you
question your effectiveness as a parent?
Do you ever wonder if it is as chaotic in anyone else’s
home as it is in yours? A
key to performing any difficult and important job well lies in
understanding the job’s specific purpose.
“The purpose of parenting is to protect our children to survive and
thrive in
the kind of society in which they will
live”
Dr.
Michael
Popkin
The
good news is that as with any difficult task, when we gain new
insights and skills we grow in our ability to meet the demands of a
difficult task head on. The
same is true for parenting. It
takes energy, time and commitment to be a good parent and understand
our role. As we open
ourselves to understanding the unique challenges of raising our
children in the 21st century, we will have greater
confidence, obtain the skills we need, and strive to accomplish one
of the greatest goals of a lifetime:
to raise a child that will “thrive in the kind of society
in which they will live.”
