Practical tools for helping local churches become Great Commission healthy

Fishers of Men

These men have taken Jesus' words to heart and have begun fishing for men through their Fly Fishing Cell Group at Cheyenne Alliance Church in Cheyenne, Wyoming.  "We call ourselves Brothers of the Angle from Isaac Walton's The Complete Angler written in 1653," says cell group leader Brian Dunlop.  "The fellowship is so important.  We get blasted with so much information these days that it is difficult for men to find the time to talk about spiritual things."

A group that began with three guys that liked to fly fish has grown to a dozen men who enjoy tying a fly or two and talking about Jesus.  It has now grown into a father/son group as men have begun to bring their boys who also enjoy the sport.  "Someday these boys will look back and remember the great fellowship, bonding and strength that came from our evenings together," says Dunlap.

Twice a month, the evening begins with relaxed fellowship, learning to tie new flies and watching an exciting fishing video.   Talk revolves around what God is doing in each of their lives.  Their time culminates in prayer as they thank our God who made those incredible creatures.  They have a day trip planned to Cabella's Sporting Goods store to look at equipment (and maybe buy a rod or two) and a fishing trip planned for the summer.

"I'm amazed.  God is so cool.  He just laid this idea on my heart and it has been great.  We have to just be willing to let Him have control, then watch what He does."

Beast Feast

What better way to reach out to the male population than serving them wild game.  Cable Road Alliance in Lima, Ohio sponsors a wild game banquet in the spring that is a huge hit.  "We had venison, trout and one guy cooked lion," says Pastor Jueckstock.   Doug Grogan gave the salvation message and nine men accepted the Lord.  It just doesn't get any better than that.

Most Wanted
Pastor Frank Smith from Cable Road Alliance

One of the interesting things about the Parable of the Sower (Matt 13; Mark 4; Luke 8) is the way the seed is scattered. It is scattered rather broadly, and the seeds sprout in various places. I have prayerfully determined a number of people that I am deliberately seeking opportunities to Cultivate, Plant, and Reap seeds of the Gospel with [my "Most Wanted List]. But God is not limited to those who I have been pursuing and will sometimes prepare the hearts of others where the seeds are scattered.

This past Christmas my wife and I purchased over 150 copies of 70 Years of Miracles, by Dr. Richard Harvey (published by Horizon Books, Camp Hill, PA) to give as gifts to our congregation and others. I handed several of these out to individuals that I was meeting at the gym where I work out. They were readily accepted and I have gotten numerous positive responses.

I gave one to Sue (not her real name), a body builder, who had said when we first met, "I never talked to a pastor before." In February I asked her how her shoulder was doing since I knew she'd been having trouble with it. She yelled across the room, "Praise the Lord, It's a miracle!" I went over and asked her about it. She said she'd read the book and asked God to heal her shoulder -- and the pain was completely gone. Later that day Sue came to me and said that the day before she'd had major pain in her abdomen and asked God to heal that. She went on to say, "D___, the pain didn't go away. But then I realized that He didn't just want me to come to Him when I had a need" (I've known people who were Christians all their life who hadn't caught that principle yet).

A week later I saw Sue again and said, "My wife and I were discussing our conversation and we really believe God is wanting to do something special in your life. Can we take you out and talk about this?" She asked if I meant that we wanted her to come to church, and I said she was welcome to come to church, but that was not what I was talking about. We were inviting her for a meal. Sue indicated that she, too, believed that God wanted to do something special for her -- she had never been happier in her life, and she'd always been an unhappy person, and she would consider our invitation.

I am unsure if Sue has already made the decision to step over the line and become a believer -- or if she is very close. I do know that I am glad I scattered the seed wider than just to those on my "Most Wanted List" and left the results to Him.
